| This mask figures Quintong also called Lawoai by locals ( which means foreigner). He figures a joker or a mischievous servant, his strange distorted face make the assistance laughing during Nuo plays. Quintong can be compared to Polichinella in the Comedia Dell Arte. This mask has been carved in semi-hard wood and shows a nice polychromia. Southern China, likely Guizhou region ,Middle to early 20th with obvious signs of used. Height 9 inches"(23 cm), wide 6 3/4 inches (17 cm). Very good overall condition Note that the mask has been restored on right side of the mouth ( left side on the picture). The mask is nicely mounted on an iron stand | ||
