| We have a number of these “Mao boxes”. This is an attractive wooden box with a gesso painted and lacquered design. About ½ have their original metal work, the others have reproduction hardware. Most come with a traditional communist slogan on the front of the lid with such statements as, “Chairman Mao is our Sun” and “Self Reliance is Strength” in Chinese calligraphy. Most of these boxes I have found in China are made of Chinese northern elm wood, but other woods are used in their making periodically. These boxes were big sellers at my old Gallery. The story for why they are called “Chairman Mao Boxes” is that they were a very good size for holding a revolutionary’s writings about Maoist theory, their copy of the “little red book”, Communist armbands, and other Communist party materials. Clearly, these boxes were used for many other purposes. They all date from the 1950’s – 1970’s, with a circa date of 1965. They average: 17 ¾ inches [45 cm] (w) x 10 ¼ inches [26 cm] (d) x 11 ¾ inches [30 cm] (h) in size.
