This handsome wooden carving comes from the Yoruba Ibeji tribe of Africa, Ogbo Mosho Region of Nigeria. It measure 13 ½” high by 4 ¼” wide by 3 ½” deep. It is in excellent condition. This is a single carving that would have been one of a pair of twins – this one being the female figure. We date it to the early to mid 20th century. It is in excellent condition.
The Yoruba are a major African ethnic group; in their culture twins are traditionally very important beings...

This is a most interesting and finely bronze casting from the 1970s. It was purchased from a dealer in fine African antique masks and artifacts in 1980. The dealer informed me that this was done by an artist of the Burkina Faso tribe to mark the moon landings and is that artist’s creative idea of what a creature on the moon might look like...

A standing wooden mask with tubular eyes from the Dan tribe. This style of mask was worn on top of the dancer’s head whose head and body would be covered with a long tailed cape of raffia. Additional height and impact would have been achieved when the dancer wore stilts. The mask measures 15” tall by 9” wide and 6 ¾” deep. The head has five raffia balls at the neck with embedded cowry shells. There are two drop earrings of beads on the ears...

A classic Mbuya mask used in ceremonies following initiation of men into the tribe. The mask represents an important person in the BaPende Society and is used to control supernatural powers. The person being initiated may be required to wear a miniature copy of the mask, usually in ivory, as a pendant. Dates from the mid 20th century. Measures 16" long by 8" wide by 6" deep. Excellent condition.
An African Bambara N'Domo initiation mask carved in the shape of an elongated human head with an antelope headdress. This association mask is darkened wood with wax, cowrie shells and red beads. The mask measures 16 1/4" high by 7" wide by 5 1/2" deep. Fine condition and patina with definite signs of having been actually worn in ceremonial initiation dances...
