This is a very handsome square lacquer tray with the top and bottom totally covered in dark black roiro lacquer. In the lower right hand corner, there is a design of a sprig of a fruit tree with a green lacquer leaf – a cluster of red berries – and the twigs and outlines of the leaf executed in gold makie lacquer. The square tray has sloped sides and measures 8 3/8” square by 1 ½” high at the rim. It is in excellent condition. We date it to the early to mid 20th century, circa 1920s – 1950s, Taisho to Showa periods.
