An Irregularly Shaped Studio Chawan or Bowl - Showa
This is an interesting irregularly shaped studio bowl or chawan from the mid 20th century, Showa period. It is glazed in a grainy dark brown glaze with lavender overtones and a splash of blue color near the bottom of the exterior.

The piece measures 5" by 4" dented square diameter at the top - the base is 2" diameter and it is 2 7/8" high at the rim. There is a bold character on the foot of the unglazed bottom; however, my translator was unable to decipher it. The bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, hairlines or restorations. We date it to the mid 20th century, circa 1950s-1960s.
