This is a nicely carved and detailed wooden carving of a standing figure of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. The face of the Kannon has inset ivory eyes - never have figured out how the carver can do that. The okimono measures 9 ¼” tall by 3” wide by 2 5/8 deep. It is in fine condition with the exception that the little finger on her right hand has been chipped off at the tip. This could be easily hidden by lightly rounding off the tip with light sandpaper or an emery board - then coloring it with brown shoe polish or crayon. The piece is signed – the signature has been translated as "Jyakuto". We date the Kannon to the Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1925 – 1950s.
