A Japanese Colored Etching - Trees – Shogo Okamoto
This is a beautiful colored etching by Shogo Okamoto (120-2001). It portrays a Japanese farm house hidden amongst a large stand of lovely early spring leafed trees. In the foreground we can see the plowed fields readied for planting. The print measures 20 ½” by 19” framed – the print itself measures 16 ¼” by 18 ½”. It is pencil signed and numbered by the artist – and is 14 of a rare small edition of 40 prints. (Okamoto’s editions usually numbered 100). It is in excellent condition – no foxing or tears – not examined out of the frame. We date the print to the 1970s. The print is very nicely framed.

Okamoto’s work is shown in the fine book "Who's Who in Modern Japanese Prints" by Francis Blakemore, Weatherhill, 1975, pp. 145-147. To quote Blakemore – “Here is an artist who obviously loves trees in all their sinewy variety. His etchings so faithfully reproduce natural scenes as to inspire in the viewer a sense of the breezy outdoors. Working often in mezzotint, the artist evokes a mood refreshing to those who spend their lives in cramped, airless cities.”

Shogo Okamoto was born in Tokyo and graduated from Tokyo Art College. He worked actively during the 1970's and 1980's, but did very little work during the 1990's. His technique is very painstaking as he applies the color to the copper plates which have been etched. He uses one plate for each of the different colors in the composition. He sometimes uses various sections of the plates to utilize the copper plates to the fullest extent. His work is of the highest quality and he is known throughout the world for his fine textured, colored etchings
