A Japanese Wooden Buddhist Acolyte 16th-17th Cty.
This nice little wooden temple acolyte is made of wood and has many traces of paint and gilt on his costume. He stands on a rock like pedestal and holds a round object in his hands. The figure measures 5 1/3 high by 2 wide by 1 deep and is in generally good condition for such an old wooden piece.

There are chips and nicks the gesso paint has worn away over time and has a been covered with a lot of smoke patina from being placed in front of later candles. It is clear that this was once part of a larger piece with the back attached to the larger piece. See the flatness of the back and the metal fastener on the upper back as evidence. We date the piece to the late 16th to early 17th century.
