This is a handsome slightly flattened round kogo with a thick makie design of gold flowers and a large dark almost black peony flower that drips over the top edge of the kogo. The interior is done in the shiny black lacquer known as roiro. The gold flowers and the large flower are in low relief indicating that it took several layers of lacquer to make this deep a design. The kogo measures 3 1/8” diameter at its widest and is 2 ¼” high. It is in very good condition with only some minor frits on the rim and a small 1/16” nick near the bottom of the lowest section of the kogo. We date the piece to the mid to late Meiji period, circa 1880s-1900. |
