A Japanese Studio Vase-Mottled Glaze –Taisho/Showa
This handsome studio vase dates from sometime between the 1920s and the 1950s. It has a particularly attractive glaze. The underglaze appears to be a tan glaze at the lower section of the vase – then a dark brown glaze on the tapered section at the top. Then an iron design of plants was drawn on the tan glaze at the bottom half. After that, it would seem that a different ivory colored glaze was applied to the vase that was formulated to make bubbles that pop open during the firing. The net result is quite striking.

The vase is in very good condition. We had originally planned to state that it is excellent condition. To our great surprise, when we took the photos and saw the close-up photos of the top rim we noticed that there had been a one inch long semi circular chip in the rim that had been expertly repaired. We have had the vase for over ten years and never noticed that flaw because the repair was done so well.

The vase measures 10” high – 5 ½” diameter – 3 ½” diameter at foot. There is no impressed potter's signature.
