This is a most unusual Japanese Mingei (Folk Art) tin and hand hammered copper box dating from the mid 19th century Japan, Late Edo or Meiji period. The piece is an early adaptation of a European Tin with a Japanese made gold gilt copper top in a kind of "ersatz" or mimic or lacquerware. The Top displays the Tokugawa Mon on a patinated ring matted ground hand done no doubt by a local artisan. The mon is nicely gilt as are the sides and the interior of the box which show subtle hammer marks on the plain surfaces. You can see hundreds of tiny hammer points used to create the relief mon which was then gilded. The interior and outer rims are heavily lacquered in raw natural amber - brown lacquer (Not to be mistaken for rust!!) This shows age shrinkage to the interior. The bottom is painted or lacquered in the classic Edo period red. There is an old collection inventory label on the bottom. The bottom is tinned iron and quite an early piece, no later than the mid 19th century. Condition is quite good with minor verdigris and russet age patina. The piece measures 6” diameter by 3” high. All in all, a very good genuine and early Mingei object. |
