| A very nice early wooden sculpture of Nichiren, Meiji Era (1868-1912). This piece appears to be a depiction of Nichiren (1222-1282), the great Buddhist monk who founded the Buddhist sect that bears his name. Nichiren is typically depicted wearing a peaked robe, as in this example. In addition, Nichiren usually holds the Lotus Sutra aloft in the left hand while clasping a rosary in the right hand. Deviations from the norm are occasionally encountered, however, and it seems likely that despite the prayerful attitude of the figure it is indeed a depiction of the great Nichiren. The expression on his face is superb - outstanding feeling of peace and meditation. Overall, an excellent piece of Meiji Buddhist art. Dimensions: Height, including colored platform and black-lacquer-and-gilt dais: 12.5 cm Width of lower dais: 9.3 cm Depth of lower dais: 6.8 cm Materials: Natural pigments, gilt, and black lacquer on wood Condition: Good. Minor loss of pigments, gilt, and lacquer does not detract from the piece but rather attests to its significant age (~100 years). Loss of wood to the lower right of the peaked portion of the cape just behind the figure's right ear, as well as to the tips of both thumbs, index fingers, and middle fingers. | |||||||||
