| Beautiful Japanese sometsuke (blue and white) dish with transfer design of a fierce dragon on one side and the classic phoenix, or ho-o bird, on the other side of the rim - both surrounding a stylized flower in cavetto. The potter must have pressed the transfer design in while the paste was still quite moist as there are bumps and ripples in the clay. Impressed signature on the base - base undecorated. There is one chip to the underside - see right side of the rim in the photo of the back - that does not show from the side or top. Dates from mid Meiji period circa 1890's. Measures 7 1/4" diameter and is 3/4" high. Normal stacking wear but otherwise very fine condition except for the bottom rim chip. | ||||||||
