| Two mukozuke dishes - appetizer dishes used in the were used as part of the service to serve the kaiseki meal, part of the formal tea ceremony. Both dishes are glazed in a soft tan crackle glaze that is very possibly Karatsu pottery, although we have not encountered Karatsu that also has an overglaze element in the design such as that in these two dishes. The design is an interesting combination of intaglio design made by placing a resist on the dish prior to glazing and then removing the resist afterwards to reveal the bamboo pattern and the Kanjj signature. Then, there are a pair of soft orange chrysanthemums executed in overglaze enamel as the only color on the dishes. The overall effect is quite nice and simple despite the complexity of the mixture of design techniques involved. Both dishes measure just under 5" in diameter and just under 7/8" deep. The edges have a slight ruffled effect that further enhances their appeal. We date these to the late Meiji period - both are in excellent condition - one has a light tea stain circle in the bowl. | |||||||||||||||
