Japanese Studio Vase - Kanji
This is one of the more unusual Japanese studio vases we have ever come across. Clearly a hand thrown vase, it is decorated with a brilliant slightly matte finish rust/orange glaze. It is obvious that there were strips of tape or other masking material put on the body of the vase before applying the thick glaze - these were then stripped off after firing - thereby giving the strong vertical lines you see. Then the glazed area was extensively carved with numerous Kanji characters - none of which, unfortunately, I am able to read. The vase is signed in a glazed over area on the foot with a two character mark. Note the slight tilt to the vase - further indication of the hand thrown nature. The vase measures 9" high and is 5" diameter at the widest - 2 1/2" diameter at the mouth. I date this one fro, the Taisho/Showa area.
