Yoshitoshi-100 Moons Series - "Takao"
Number one in the famous series of Yoshitoshi's "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon". Also known as "By now you must be near Komakata - a cuckoo calls". According to John Stevenson - "Takao was the name chosen by eleven famous courtesans of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The sixth was known for her writing talents, and it may be she who is illustrated here." This print was engraved by Yamamoto and bears the seal of Yoshitoshi. Printed in 1885. Condition is fair to good with toning and an interesting light stain around the moon - which, surprisingly, fits into the theme. Color and registration are still quite good. Standard oban size.
