Excellent Carved Wood Shinto Priest - Meiji
Very handsome carved wood figure of a Japanese priest - I believe a Shinto priest as opposed to Buddhist. Covered with a light gesso glaze - the piece stands 11" tall x 3 1/2" wide x 3" deep. The priest holds a scepter in one hand and a round object in the left hand. The stand measures 1" high x 6 1/4" wide x 4 3/4" deep. Good condition with some chipping and rubbing to the gesso - but still retains a wonderfully serene presence. Dates from late Edo to early Meiji period - circa 1850-1900.
