A Meji Pottery Figural of a Monkey Priest
An unusual glazed pottery figural of a seated monkey in the pose of a priest holding a flame like item in its hands. The face of the monkey is unglazed brown clay - the body and robes are executed in an off white crackle glaze with dark grey spots as accents on the front. The monkey's hair is glazed in an overglaze orange/brown enamel. At the lower part of the back there is an old museum or collectors notation in black paint that says: "Japanese - WLRNC - 1899" and there is a pencil notation on the inside of the body that is simply the number 4205. It is quite safe to date this fascinating piece to no later than the mid Meiji period - and it could well be from the Edo period. Just because it was marked by the collector in 1899 does not rule out a much earlier date of its making. Excellent condition with no chips or problems or restorations. Measures 7 3/8" high by 3 3/4: wide by 3 1/2" deep.
