A Henan (Honan) Vase with Vertical Ribbing
A finely potted tall slim vase with brown/black glaze accented with vertical ribbing in white. The vase measures 8 3/4" tall and is 3 3/8" diameter at it's widest.

This type of black wares is described by Margaret Medley in her classic reference book: "Yuan Porcelain and Stoneware", Faber and Faber, London, 1974 as follows – " The pieces forming this group were made at Pa-ts’un and also at other kilns in the area. The pieces forming the group are often massive, with white ribs in relief against a glossy black. There are also jars and vases - - many small jars, which are probably early in date, perhaps as early as Northern Sung, were succeeded in Yuan by very much larger ones, many of which are only partly glazed on the outside and on which the glaze does not always reach down and across the bottom inside. The bodies were either coarse grained, but well compacted and hard pale buff, or were extremely hard and almost white, clearly indicating that more than one kiln was involved in their manufacture. Examination of this group suggests that the base glaze was a thick very dark one on which the white ribs were trailed as a stiff slip to form the ribs, the whole then being covered with a transparent colourless glaze, which in firing became slightly contaminated by the darker underlying glaze."

We believe that this vase quite possibly dates from the Yuan dynasty, 1260-1368, however cannot be dead sure. We will be conservative and date it to a 19th century origin. The vase is in excellent condition with no chips of restorations.
