Very Unusual Cloisonne Lidded Box - Chinese
This very small cloisonne lidded box is totally unusual. Starting at the top, it is fully enameled all the way around the top, sides, bottom and inside. There is a hinged lid. The top is decorated with a weird demon face - much like those masks seen in Chinese Opera - for that reason I am attributing the piece to Chinese origin - even though it does have the gin bari technique used by the Japanese cloisonne makers. On the bottom is a series of Oriental characters which a kind friend has traslated for us - "The Chinese characters at the bottom reads: Chinese opera facial painting of Chang Fei (a famous general during the Three Kingdom period of Chinese history).Strangely, there is a number 5 on the inside of the lid. Along the slanted sides are stylized dragons on an archaic design. The box measures 2 1/16" long x 1 1/2" wide x 1/2" deep. The box is in perfect condition - probably dates from sometime between 1900 - 1950.
