|A Japanese Kutani pottery charger with a bold design of a long tailed phoenix - the symbol for the Empress – and a smaller yellow headed bird looking on. The border is geometric bands in the traditional Kutani palette of greens, purples, yellow and blues. Of the bottom rim are three designs of green leaves with three different colors of berries – pale yellow, pale green and pale blue. The base is signed in red with the characters that translate to Made in Kutani. (The two top characters translate to Nine Mountains – the region from which Kutani ware is made.) The charger measures 9 ¼” diameter and is 1 ½” deep – it is in excellent condition with no chips or restorations. Dates from the late Edo period, circa 1840s.|
