A modern Japanese double gourd studio vase with a design of a gnarly pine tree and an extensive poem in Kanji characters. Our colleague, Edward Kawanabe of Sanai Fine Art and Antiques, has provide this rough translation of the poem –”Mountain, pine tree branch and color coming out from between the clouds”. An interesting design touch is the use of the splatter techniques at the top and middle of the vase. This is achieved by blowing the underglaze blue color through a straw and fine mesh – a nice effect. The vase measures 7 ½” high and is 4 ¼” diameter and is in excellent condition – no chips or cracks. Probably dates from the period 1930s to 1950s – possibly earlier.
