An Early Japanese Cloisonne Covered Kogo
This fine early Japanese cloisonne round covered box (kogo) is 3" wide and 2" high. It has a lovely design of flowers and butterflies. It is in excellent condition - exterior is fine, all the gilding around the rim has worn off leaving only the copper. The rim on the bottom half has many small bends and there is a chip to the inside of the lid as shown. No mark. I date this one from the early Meiji period circa 1870's. This dating can be confirmed by the many tiny pinholes in the piece which was characteristic of this early period of Japanese cloisonne.
