This is a gorgeous stand hand made of curling hardwood burl with a sloped top and sinuous natural form. It dates from the Meiji period, late 19th century. The stands swirling edges follows the natural tree shape, creating a wonderfully elegant movement. The natural deep knotholes add a further interesting element to its pure organic form. The inherent natural dark honey/caramel hue of the wood enhances the rich grain in the burl, giving its graphic wavy design a luminous depth and sheen. The stand originally came with a tacky glass elephant with a stem that was then mounted in the hole drilled on the top sloping edge. This tiny hole could easily be filled with wood putty and stained to match the rest of the top. Although designed as a stand, we think it stands alone as a piece of pure beauty and grace. The stand measures 5 tall at it highest and sloped to a height of 4 Ό at the other end of the top. It is 9 ½ long and six inches wide. We believe that the maker only altered the natural shape by the carving the sloped top and the solid footing. It was then polished and left as found. For lovers of fine wood this is a fine addition to your collection. We date it to the period of 1885-1910. It is in excellent condition with no chips. |
