This is a quite unusual carved wooden Buddha that was painted dark brown, which has then further darkened from age, possibly from smoke in a temple setting. There are a couple of traces of colored paint – the red lip and slight traces of light gold in the eyes. It has the rough edges associated with ittobori (one-knife) carving – but we are not sure that it is actually Ittobori. The Buddha is in a woven rattan or reed cylindrical cup with an elongated U shaped opening in the front through which the figure can be seen. The figure is 4-¼” high by 1 ½” diameter. The rattan holder is 4 ¾” high and is 3” diameter. The figure is in very good condition - a few rubs to the edges of the robes, but no big chips or cracks. We date the piece to the late 18th to early 19th period, Edo period. |
