A Rock Crystal Baku – Japanese – Edo/Meiji
This is a superb rock crystal Japanese okimono of a mythical Baku. We date it to the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850-1880s. The Baku measures 4” long by 2 1/2” high by 2 3/8” thick. It is in mint condition.

This elephant-like creature represents the mythological "Baku"(Eater of Nightmares). Originally recorded in Shinto mythology, this creature is described as having: a hairy head; long proboscis similar to an elephant’s trunk; two tusks; four claws on each foot; a spiny backbone; a spotted hide; and the tail of an ox. Baku's were considered to be benevolent--traveling through dreams; stalking and devouring evil demons that cause nightmares.
