| This is a rare Banko Tea Caddy with all three pieces still intact – the outer lid, the inner lid and the base. The natsume is unglazed and has relief enamel designs of two flying birds and several hanging wisteria flowers and leaves. The piece measures 3” diameter at the waist and is 3” high. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. We date it to the Taisho period, 1920s. It has a stamped mark on the base which we believe translates ‘bankofueki, or literally "eternity, constancy", as this was used on a majority of Banko ware. "Banko Ware" pottery has been produced since the nineteenth century both for the domestic market and for export. Banko ware comes usually as teapots, tea bowls and figures with charming designs of a peculiar style. Some "Banko" pottery is unglazed - while others can be very colorful and highly decorated with sculpture-like high relief's in very imaginative shapes." It is rare to find a Natsume (tea caddy) made of Banko ware. | ||||||||||
