A beautiful Japanese high footed tea bowl (Chawan) with a gorgeous thick glaze in shades of pale bluish gray thick glaze. The foot is glazed with a thin transparent glaze to let the natural color of the clay show through. The glaze was deliberately applied so that it would run and leave some spots where the clay shows through. Even the base has the same color glaze with areas of the underlying clay showing through. The chawan measures 5 3/16" diameter at the top – 2 1/2" diameter at the base - and stands 3 1/4" tall. It is not signed nor have a potters mark. It is in excellent condition - only a slight sign of usage on the rim of the foot. We are not sure of dating – we tend to date it as a studio pottery piece made sometime between the late Meiji to early Showa period, circa 1910 – 1940. It has superb presence and would be a great addition to any collection of Japanese tea articles. |
