An interesting papier mache tray with straight rims with an excellent scene of jugglers performing. The scene show a strong man lying on his back and balancing three different size wooden buckets. Atop the highest budget is another heavy-set performer in a seated position. To the right of the performers, a mother and child stand watching the performance. To the left of the performers is a young boy holding what appears to be a turtle. He seems to be standing in water as his legs show only to mid calf. Behind these people you can see red flowers and a set of three houses in the distance. The tray measures 7 7/8" diameter and the straight rims are 1/2" high. It is in excellent condition. We date it to late Edo to early Meiji periods, circa 1860s-1880s. |
