A early Japanese wooden candle-holder with red and black lacquer coating. The undercoat is a black lacquer over which a shiny dark red lacquer layer was added. The candle-holder is in a tripod form and has a short metal pricket in the top to anchor the candle. It is clearly hand turned and carved by some folk carver in the country. It is obvious from the wear that the piece dates from the mid to late 19th century, Edo/Meiji period, circa 1850s-1890s. It is in generally good condition with the expected chips and nicks that came from extensive usage. It measures 2 1/2" diameter and is 2 1/2" high. A fine example of early Japanese folk art from the rural countryside. |
