This is a very handsome square tokkuri that is totally in the style of the master potter, Shoji Hamada. Hamada himself never signed his pieces saying that his work would identify itself. He also said that there would be dozens of pieces made that would be taken as by him, but that his would stand alone. That being said, we think that there is a good possibility that this is a genuine Hamada tokkuri – we just cannot prove that claim. We show a sample of an almost identical tokkuri that is in the book “HAMADA, Potter” by Bernard Leach, Kodansha International, 1975, plate 35. The tokkuri we are presenting here is also a press-molded, wax resist bottle from the 1950s. It has the same slightly crooked neck and a similar wax resist design on a thick dark brown glaze. It has splashes of light red, green and white on all four sides. The piece measures 6 ¼” high and is 3” square. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. It does not come with a box. |
