| An wonderful signed ceramic Ox / Buffalo from a Buddhist Temple in Kyoto dating to the late Edo period (1800 - 1868). We believe this animal would have been found in some sort of altar display, or during the year year of the ox it would have been on show outside the temple. It was, and still is, common practice to display a model of whichever of the twelve animals in the Chinese Zodiac represents a given year. On entering some restaurants in Japan you usually find a model animal in a glass case at the entrance. This ox is well over a hundred years old and has been signed on the base details by the maker - sorry, I do not have the ability to read it. Made of red fired clay with some form of dark coating on the surface. A fine layer of dust also gives the animal age. The features, including nostrils, mouth, eyes and horns have been skillfuly rendered and the ox gives off an aura of serenity. Dimensions: 7" long x 4" (at widest point) x 3.5" high. Overall condition is good with slight loss of surface coating and scuffing in places. We would kindly ask collector who purchases this item to treat it with respect as it is a religious item and so deserves a good home. Would suit somebody with a deep seated interest in Japanese Buddhism or an animal lover. | |||||||||
