This is a very handsome pedestal cake table, possibly for use in the tea ceremony. The top of the table is an orange/red lacquer that has been combed to look like a series of wave. The style is very similar to that of Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891), one of the most noted lacquer ware artists in Japan. The red waves round section it surrounded by a wide band at the rim of black roiro lacquer. The bottom of the top of the table and the legs and pedestal base are all executed in the same shiny black roiro lacquer. Black roiro-nuri lacquer is a technique wherein the highest quality black urushi lacquer is applied and polished in several layers. The top of the piece measures 10” diameter - the piece measures 4 ½” high to the rim of the top – and the base is 5” diameter. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks.
