This is a very fine Japanese studio pottery bowl with an underglaze tan crackle glaze. There is an over the glaze design in thick enamels depicting a group of white round soft “blobs” that almost look like cotton bolls. These are connected with dark brown branches and strands of medium green slip trails that are all tangled. The underside of the bowl is a dark brown glaze with almost a tea dust tenmoku glaze. Over one edge of the bowl a thick drip of the green glaze hangs down over the side. There is an impressed maker’s mark on the base but it is too glazed over to be able to translate. The bowl measures 7 ¼’ diameter to the three corners and stands 2 ¾” high. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. We date it to the Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1920s-1950.
