An unusual porcelain snuff bottle of shield shape finely painted on one face with two horses underneath a tree in ink and sepia pigments, the reverse in sepia with a figure underneath a tree amidst a larger landscape, the base marked "Qian Long Nian Zhi" in seal script in iron red. 2 inches tall without stopper. 1900-1920's.

A small agate snuff bottle of compressed ovoid form rising to a short cylindrical neck and a flat mouth, supported on a raised, flat base; carved in low relief with a leopard and rockery on one face, the reverse with a feline and bat; the material of brown colour with dark brown markings and fairly well hollowed.

The leopard (bao) is a symbol of bravery and rank. It decorates the badge of 3rd rank military officials. The bat (fu) is a symbol for blessings...
