*Cicadas are among the earliest motifs; found on archaic bronzes and Han jades, they represent rebirth because they can hibernate in the ground up to seven years.

*Compare a related white jade 'cicada' bottle from the Princeton University Art Museum, illustrated in Hughes, The Blair Bequest, Baltimore, 2002, no. 5, and two examples in Moss, Graham & Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, No.1, Jade, nos.58 - 59.

*Compare an outstanding bottle from the Hsieh collection, sold at Sotheby's, New York, 23rd March 2004, lot 126.
