Petite Statue Notre Dame de Montaigu Belgium Figure
Wonderful petite porcelain statue of Notre Dame de Montaigu belgium figure. In the countryside near Brabant, Belgium, around the year 1415, a shepherd noticed a statue of the Virgin and Child that had fallen out of an oak tree. This oak had a cruciform shape and had been a pilgrimage site since 1200. The statue was too heavy for him to lift back into the tree alone, and his master had to come help him replace the statue in the branches of the oak. A small sanctuary was built beneath the tree and remained in this spot until it was destroyed by the Spanish in 1568. In 1608, the Archbishop of Anvers had the oak chopped down and several other smaller madonna statues were made from the wood. A new church was constructed to hold the statue on the location of the oak in 1627. Several pieces of wood from the oak are kept in the main altar and a large replica of the tree sits on top of the dome of the church. It measures 3.25" tall and about .75" across. It is empressed 1817 Germany on the back. A wonderful piece!
