A fine and unusual 19th century Chinese rock crystal snuff bottle, of flattened shield ovoid form, very well hollowed, superbly and boldly carved in shallow relief to each side with a bat spreading its wings, comes with a later date cat's eye beaded stopper. (Wooden stand not included)
REFERENCE : A Chinese double gourd form rock crystal snuff bottle with bat carvings, dated to the Daoguang period, from the Collection of the Stone Picking Studio (Cai Shi Xuan), was sold in Sotheby's London sale of Important Chinese Snuff Bottles, on 21st June 1995.
DATE : Chinese, Qing Dynasty, mid 19th century.
MARK : no mark or signature.
SIZE : approximately 2 1/2" (6.3 cm) high including stopper.
CONDITION : the bottle is in very good overall condition with minor age wear; small areas to one side of shoulder and neck with tiny natural stone inclusions, bruises, dimples and fissures; a very small and shallow chip to another side of neck; a few microscopic nibbles around the rim edges only, all of which are very minor and insignificant. The stopper is excellent and well fitted but spoon broken and lost. No other damage or repair noted.
