Very Rare 19th C Famille-Verte Month Cup, Kangxi Mark

An exquisite and extremely rare 19th century Chinese Famille-Verte 'Month' Cup, delicately potted and superbly painted in the Kangxi style with a flowering apricot tree and clumps of grass issuing from the middle distance, representing the second month, inscribed on the reverse side with a couplet "qing xiang he su yu, jia se chu qing yan" (after the fragrance of the evening rain, the rising sun enhances the beauty of the flowers in the mist), ending with a single-character seal mark "shang" (appreciation), the underside glazed white and inscribed with a neatly written six-character Kangxi reign mark in underglazed-blue. (Wooden stand NOT included)

REFERENCE : Kangxi mark and period month cups representing the second month have been sold by Sotheby's Hong Kong in 1997 & 1998 (see images). Complete sets of 12 month cups from the Kangxi period can be found in the Hong Kong Museum of Art and illustrated in their exhibition catalog 'The Wonders of the Potter's Palette', another set in the Palace Museum Collection, another complete set have been sold in Christies Hong Kong Sale, March 1991, lot 543.

PROVENANCE : English Collection.

DATE : Chinese, Qing Dynasty, 19th Century.

MARK : underglazed-blue six-character Kangxi mark on base.

SIZE : approximately 2 1/4" (5.5 cm) high, 2 5/8" (6.8 cm) diameter.

CONDITION : very good condition, there are three small and very faint superficial glaze hairlines to the body and a few to the base, but all these hairlines are on the exterior surface of the glaze and does not go through to the interior. No chips or other damages, and no repairs.
