A finely carved 19th century antique Chinese circular tortoiseshell covered box, the slightly domed cover deeply carved in high relief with figures in a landscape scene with fishing boat and willow trees, the base worked with a similar scene in shallow relief.

REFERENCE : A circular tortoiseshell covered box carved with similar scene, but of larger size and dated to the 18th / 19th century, was included in the "Minor Arts of China III" exhibition, item no.51, by Spink & Son Ltd, London, April 1987 (see last image). Compare also a similarly carved circular tortoiseshell box of similar size which we have sold on Trocadero, archives section item # 644372

DATE : Chinese, Qing Dynasty, 19th Century.

MARK : no base mark or signature.

SIZE : approximately 2 3/4" (7 cm) diameter.

CONDITION : in very good condition with two small shallow chips to the edges, and a age split line around the side of cover but it does not go through to the interior (see images). No other damages or repairs.
