A fine large 19th century antique Chinese Carved White Nephrite Jade Hairpin "Bian-fang", of spatula form and finely carved in shallow relief with alternated pattern of "shou" characters, the reverse plain and not carved, the stone of fine even white tone and translucent with patches of natural white inclusions. NOTE : This type of long flattened spatula form Chinese hairpin, known as "bian-fang", was sometime mistaken for as page turner, or even as paper weight, it was in fact part of the "qi-tou" (the headdress of Manchu ladies of rank), it was worn across the top of this headdress to stiffen the frame.
REFERENCE : Compare a set of three white nephrite jade "bian-fang", similar in size and all carved with differing motifs, has been previously sold by us. (Trocadero item #290066 in Sold Items section, see last image)
DATE : Chinese, Qing Dynasty, 19th Century.
MARK : no mark or signature.
SIZE : approximately 12 1/8" (30.8 cm) in length.
CONDITION : in perfect condition, a tiny area on the rounded tip slightly polished noted for accuracy only (see image). No chips, no cracks, and no repairs.
