| A small pair of alcove or 'tokonoma' sliding doors (fusuma) from the first half of the 18th century for use during the New Year period. The scene depicts a family celebrating the New Year in a sumptuous residence leading out to a garden filled with cranes, turtles and pines; all symbolizing longevity. A flowering plum in the garden stretches the scene into the early spring season. The doors are presented in the same compositional format as traditional Yamato-e handscrolls, strongly suggesting that they were painted by an artist of the Tosa school. Painted with ink, pigments, gofun and gold on paper the doors are in good condition. Each door measures 11'' by 18'' (28 by 46 cm). | ||||||||||||||
