Summer grasses and flowers

A profusion of summer grasses and flowers intermingling with abandon. The graceful orchid, destination of the superbly rendered butterfly, hides self-consciously behind the dancing grasses. The work culminates with the hedonistic rhythms and colors of the large poppies. The work is a virtual cacophony of nature, enhanced by the presence of the frog and butterfly. Painted with pigment, gofun and gold on silk, the work dates to the earlier part of the Showa era, circa 1930. It is in very good condition in all respects, displaying beautifully in its original floral-patterned brocade mounting. The brocade is finished with exquisite lacquer rollers. The oversized scroll measures 81 by 29 inches. The piece is signed and sealed Shinka – no further information is has been unearthed.
