SANYO (b.1893) - Spring landscape

A Taisho or early Showa period work by the Tokyo nihonga artist Sanyo. The spring foliage of the foreground is immediate and compelling, ushering the viewer into the town. The traditional country village is shown as an enclave of stability in an ever changing environment. The strong lineal definition of the distant, windswept plains almost gives a sense of the earth's tumbling. The scene has been painted with pigment and gofun on silk. It is in good condition. There is one soft scratch running down through the middle of the painting and continuing onto the silk brocade. The mounting is a little stiff and the bottom wooden roller curls slightly upwards. The painting is signed and sealed Sanyo (Hiraiwa Saburo). He was born in Tokyo in 1893, and graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1922. He studied under Kawai Gyokudo. His works were accepted for the national Teiten exhibition in 1921, 1925, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1933 and 1937. The scroll measures 51 by 28 inches. The painting measures 19 by 22 inches.
