Reimei (b.1900) - Pheasant & Hollyhocks

An exceptionally detailed and vibrant four panel screen from the early Showa era, circa 1930. An elongated Japanese pheasant stands between towering hollyhocks, an unfortunate praying mantis clasped in its beak. Chinese bellflowers and fringed pinks balance the dramatic hollyhocks, whose large green leaves and brilliant blooms dominate the landscape. The scene has been painted with mineral pigments and gofun on silk. There are areas of foxing to the lower left and upper right of the pheasant. Water marks exist around the hinges, most noticeably through the tail and neck of the bird. The screen stands 73 inches high and measures 96 inches across. The seal reads Reimei (Kitagawa Reimei). He was born in Kyoto in 1900. A student of Kikuchi Keigetsu (1879-1955), he also graduated from both the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts and the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting. His works were accepted into the national Teiten exhibitions 8, 11, 14, 15 and the second Shinbunten.
