| Elongated across a pair of two panel screens, a boatman poles home his bamboo raft in the very early evening, his back slightly hunched after a days work. The wooden street lantern has just been lit and is emitting a very soft glow. The wizened branches of huge old pines reach toward the shallow water, almost impossibly laden with small cones. The 1920's work has been painted with color, pigments and sumi ink on silk. The trunks and cones have been brushed over with coarse black carbon pigment, retaining a large degree of its sparkling mineral base. The signature and seals read Bizan. No further information has been forthcoming. Each screen stands 67 inches high and measures 74 inches across. One water stain runs intermittently from the top of the left screen toward the boatman's head. It is quite soft and easily assimilated into the scene. Otherwise the screens are in very good condition. The backs are presently being re-papered and the hinges re-built. | |||||||||||||||
