'Approaching dusk'

Dating to the early Showa period, this work is titled 'Shayo', or 'Approaching dusk'. The white cat is sitting under a thin cover of spiderwort plants, their presence indicating late spring or early summer. Spiderworts open their flowers at dawn and fade by the mid afternoon, their appearance here intimating the passing of the day. The work has been painted with gofun and pigments on silk. It is in very good original condition. The signed and sealed storage box also bears a label with the date of Showa 11, September 5th (1936). This label would have been attached by the shop that mounted the scroll. The scroll measures 80 by 21 inches. The image measures 49 by 16 inches. The work is signed and sealed Gizaburo. His full name is Awazu Ginzaburo. The only reference to him that has appeared is a submission to the 12th national Teiten exhibition held in 1930.
