Mid 20th century - Nihonga screen

A strikingly original and refreshing two-fold nihonga screen. An animated Japanese tit or shijukara sits atop a group of upturned flower pots. The late afternoon sun is creating long shadows across a row of unseen ornamental chrysanthemums. The seal reads Ryu although in the absence of further information we have been unable to confirm his details. The screen dates to the mid 20th century. The backing paper features repeated images of pigs, almost certainly in reference to the year of the pig - most likely 1960 or 1972. The screen is in good to very good original condition. The pigments are near perfect as are the structural aspects of the screen. Very light foxing is present. The thickly textured screen has been created by first laying the sandy cream colored pigment base over paper. The pots and the tit have been painted over this with almost equally thick pigment, the shadows with a light, non-textured color. The screen stands 69 inches high and measures 71 inches across.
