Bokuten - Ink Daruma
Likely dating to the later Muromachi period (1336-1573) this ancient ink portrait of the Bodhidharma bears an enlightened and highly compelling expression. The inscription says: "I have added an inscription to this painting of the Patriarch - Who wants to hear what I have to say? He eases others' minds [as naturally as], the bright moon and the fresh breeze; [Daruma points the way for people] to be enveloped by enlightenment. His gaze shatters obstacles and he sees clearly, the deepest jade valleys and the vast sky". The painter and the calligrapher are almost certainly two different people. Unfortunately the only signature accompanying the inscription is the little kao at the end, so the artist will likely remain anonymous. The portrait is sealed Bokuten. Bokuten is a Chinese name so I assume the painting is either Chinese in origin or was executed in Japan by traveling Chinese monks. The last two lines of the inscription also refer to the famous 'radiant pearl valley' in China. Executed in ink on paper the work hasn't completely escaped the ravages of time. Numerous restorations have been carried out over the years, generally dealing with insect damage and surface rubbing. At one stage the painting has been cut horizontally into two with one or both of the edges being slightly trimmed. In spite of this the impact of the work remains undiminished. The painting has very recently been re-mounted with an ancient silk brocade and finished with ivory rollers. The scroll measures 54'' by 18'' (138 by 45 cm). The image measures 25'' by 15'' (64 by 39 cm).
