| An Edo period ink image of fish and waterplants by the Kano school artist Eishin. Originally a Chinese subject, the painting is influenced by the works of Fan An-Jen, a famed Chinese painter of fishes from the 13th century. Fish exemplify creatures who achieved happiness by being perfectly in tune with their environment with such thoughts being founded in the philosophies of Daoism. The image measures 43'' by 14'' (110 by 36 cm). The scroll measures 73'' by 20'' (186 by 50 cm). Most recently mounted during the first half of the 20th century the painting and mounting are in reasonable condition. There are a couple of small splits in the silk and a couple of past repairs that could be improved upon. The mounting is quite fine and certainly complimentary, if a little dirty. As for hanging it now and enjoying it as it is, that is certainly an option - as is restoration here in Kyoto. Kano Eishin Hidenobu (1717-1763) was born and lived in Edo. He was the 11th generational master of the venerated Nakabashi branch of the Kano School of Art. He received the title of Hogen in 1746 and Hoin in 1762. He was patronized by the 10th Tokugawa Shogun, Tokugawa Ieharu (1737-1786). | |||||||||||||
